iKON (YG)
Many k-pop fans do not know of this underrated group iKON and even less about their leader, B.I. iKON is a group of 7 members with an average age of 21 (international age). They took part in YG's survival show, WIN - Who Is Next as Team B. They competed against Team A, now known as WINNER, a group of 5 members during the competition. [Now a 4 member group]. Team B, iKON had lost WIN and proceeded to go back to train at YG. In March 2014, 5 months after WIN ended, Team B was thrown into another survival show Mix and Match, where they were given the name iKON. There's only so much a person can take and what more at a young age? Here's why I think Hanbin may have developed some mental health issues and evidence to prove it:
Firstly, to clarify, B.I's real name is Kim Hanbin , which is the name I prefer to use when referring to him. I honestly think Hanbin is a beautiful name. Now on to serious business.
Some background information on Hanbin:
Hanbin is a '96 liner who is now 21. He is the leader of iKON, in charge of composing their songs, choreographing their dances, teaching and leading them. It has been this way since their training period and iKON members have admitted Hanbin is under the most pressure out of all of them at all times. Going by age ranking, Hanbin is right in the middle of 7 members. Jay (Jinhwan) , Song (Yunhyeong) and Bobby are all older than him, with Jay being the oldest and Yunhyeong and Bobby being the same age as each other but one year older than Hanbin. Donghyuk, Junhwe and Chanwoo are all younger than Hanbin with Donghyuk and Junhwe being the same age and Chanwoo being the maknae (youngest). Hanbin has no one of the same age as him in the group. It is fairly rare to see a group with the leader in the middle in terms of age ranking but quite common in YG.
Hanbin joined YG in 2011, together with Jinhwan and Bobby slightly afterwards. This trio is known as the pioneers of iKON and also are the pillars of iKON. Even though both Bobby and Jinhwan are older than Hanbin, they have no qualms in admitting that Hanbin deserves to be their leader because of his musical talent and leadership skills. Not only that, he is a complete workaholic.
In 2013, a year after Junhwe, Yunhyeong and only a couple months after Donghyuk joined them, they were announced to be on WIN - Who Is Next. Back then they were called Team B. In the whole of WIN, Team B was obviously favored by all the producers and even YG which was a fatal mistake despite their talent. The favoritism resulted in the audience's pity for Team A, causing the majority of votes to go to Team A. In WIN, Mnet gave us a look into Team A and B's monthly evaluations and other competition based missions. Team B outdid Team A in almost everything and when they didn't, Hanbin was immediately blamed.
In the midst of preparing for a evaluation in Episode 2, YG himself popped by to see how far in thhey were with preparations. Despite them putting up a fairly acceptable performance less than 2 minutes after they were taken off guard by their scary boss walking into their practice room. YG was not kind with words, right after saying he did not like the performance, he calls Hanbin out about it. You can probably imagine that it was not the first time this happened.
The whole competition of WIN was very dramatic and if you are interested, I recommend you watch it but getting to the point. Some things to note from WIN was that Hanbin blatantly stated it would be his fault if they lost. He confessed to a empty room and a camera attached to the ceiling that Jinhwan came from Jeju, Bobby came from the US, Junhwe and Donghyuk quit school and that made him feel pressured. He felt that he was responsible for their futures because they gave up so much for it, he talked as if it hadn't given up anything. Hanbin has also overworked himself and the other members to the point of having to get IVs during WIN.
Team B ended up losing WIN and almost vanished off the face of earth afterwards. In 2014 they came back with Mix and Match. The starting of Mix and Match were interviews from WIN and newly updated interviews. It had been mentioned that Hanbin was depressed for 2 months and proceeded to work hard in composing songs so there would be enough for their debut.
In the 3rd Episode of Mix and Match, B.I runs away after giving in to the pressure. He disappears for a full 4-5 hours before calling the staffs to pick him. He had to deal with Show Me the Money, in which he did not do well for, composing and choreographing, filming Mix and Match, taking care of the new members and much more at once and couldn't take it. In a separate interview from the same episode, Yunhyeong admits he feels bad for Hanbin and breaks down in tears, hoping that he will share the burden. Junhwe admits he feels bad as well because Hanbin is usually strong and has a lot of pride and would never run away like this but this made Junhwe realised how tired his hyung must have been. I am just going to say YG is terrifying and it must have been really bad for Hanbin to pull this sort of stunt despite usually being responsible.
After Hanbin gets eliminated from Show Me the Money, he is left with more time to take care of the new members and deal with the survival show. At the start of the show, it was already said the pioneers, Jinhwan, Bobby and Hanbin were confirmed to be in iKON but they had to take care of the members. In subsequent rounds and competitions, whoever was in Hanbin's team was guaranteed an almost 100% win.
Team B debuts as iKON with the original members : B.I, Jinhwan , Bobby, Yunhyeong, Junhwe, Donghyuk and new member Chanwoo after the end of Mix and Match where Yang Hongseok (now known as a PENTAGON member) and Jung Jinhyeong (debuting soon) were eliminated.
After debut, B.I continues composing many songs and leading the team well but there are hidden details and calls for help by the members that maybe no one has ever thought twice about.
On Pops In Seoul, ARIRANG K-POP, iKON members were to write profiles for each other. There was a section about "Secrets Fans Do Not Know About" and Donghyuk mentions B.I has a habit of tearing paper into shreds. This habit is commonly known to be a trait people with anxiety or anger management issues show. To further confirm this suspicion, Jinhwan says : " Maybe it is because he has lack of affection." It is not a well phrased sentence but the basics can be inferred from it.
On Winner TV episode 6, YG has a meeting with Winner to discuss about their debut. To guilt trip the WINNER members, he brings up seeing Hanbin sleeping in the office at 3PM after staying up to compose or work on whatever. This was before Mix and Match, and after WIN - Who Is Next. Nobody knows when B.I developed his workaholic traits but it has been known through all fans of his that he has worked very hard since WIN.
In multiples interviews and concerts, all iKON members have mentioned multiple times about Hanbin overworking himself. I see this as a SOS call from them. Donghyuk has said : " Hanbin's real life revolves around being in the studio, eating in the studio, watching videos, composing and recording."
Jinhwan has mentioned he has not seen Hanbin around recently as he leaves for the studio when the rest prepare to sleep. And when they prepare to leave the dorm in the day, Hanbin comes back to rest. Junhwe says he never knows when Hanbin is in bed due to the blanket always covering his head and Hanbin reasons that he wants to block off the daylight. Now if any of you do not know, sleeping with a blanket over your head is very bad for health but it's not like Hanbin has a choice if he wants to get some rest.
Recently, in an interview regarding his solo album, Bobby gave Hanbin a little shout out. When asked if other members did not appeal to YG for a solo album, Bobby responds by saying : "No that is not how it was. B.I continues to live in his workroom ad is there every time I go. He is working hard on songs. He works so hard that sometimes I look at him and I feel like I lack a lot (in capabilities) "
Now this obviously does not answer the question but Bobby chose to ride any question regarding the other members to give out an SOS call to fans.
Just before debut, Hanbin's father was involved in a controversy regarding his business. This makes me realize something, we have never seen him come support Hanbin on WIN or Mix & Match. It is always only Hanbin's mother and little sister, Hanbyul. Whether it is on VCR or in real life, we have never seen Hanbin's father support him. Something to note for reference. People protested against Hanbin's debut due to his fathers wrongdoings and I cannot imagine how scared he must have been. The risk of not being able to debut after sacrificing so much.
Hanbin has showed signs of anger management issues on a VLive when he smacks Chanwoo, causing a big scandal. Many international fans do not know this, but it is pretty common for older Korean guys to smack their younger brothers as and when they like but nevertheless, it is a sign of anger management issues if he could not control it on a broadcast. (And it did cause a lot of trouble) Jinhwan blamed in on sensitivity but you can see that it was tense and all. Like there was something else.
If you ask me, I think Hanbin thinks he's not good enough and that if he doesn't work hard enough, something will happen to the team. This causes him anxiety and anger, frustration at himself. I think he hasn't really walked out of the shadows of WIN and Mix & Match. I am no one to judge but this is my opinion.
This was written at 3am and I apologize for the messy timeline. It is very unorganized but I do hope this article has shown a different side of things in iKON. I do sincerely hope their leader and the rest of the boys are okay though!

You should do a revaluation of his mental health right now. Especially since they’d had ikon tv you can tell that hanbin isolates himself
ReplyDeleteHi, I think maybe you should evaluate because Hanbin never isolated himself, they isolated him. When he was hiking he tried to call Yunhyeong who hung up on him. He asked all of them if anyone would want to go with him and no one said anything I behavior that has persisted throughout the group span. There are dozens of times they have isolated him just like when they perform best friend, they always make him be iKONICS friends so he has to dance alone and when he tells them he doesn't want to anymore, they embarrass him. On their summertime, no one chose him for the person they are closest to while he chose Junhoe and Jinhwan. Yunhyeong chose him later but he literally was only chosen once despite always being around and being one of the main players, they often exclude him and if you think that's on him, you're making excuses for the members instead of actually passing attention. They have a hard time accepting him as a friend because he's harsh to them and they now see him as someone who makes the rules. But there hasn't been a time he wasn't seeking love and attention from them so I'd love to know where you got the idea he isolated himself while Bobby was treating Donghyuk so bad like he didn't want him around then isolated himself during the 3 meals a day episode and fished on his own.
DeleteThere is a difference between working and isolation. When he was working, none of the other members joined him because he works at night while they are sleeping.
Now I feel for Hanbin now... I use to get like a little mad at Hanbin for yelling at other members and being mean to them i didn't realize how much he really goes through 😔
ReplyDeleteIf you watch mix and match you will understand that he is always stressed at such a young age.
DeleteBecause he is a perfectionist, he tends to lash out but recent interviews before he left they all said he was getting much better. And he kept asking them if he was because he felt bad for getting mad so easily. He was just too young.
Being a leader means a heavy responsibility for he's members. At first I didn't like him for being cold to other members, but when I watched a video of him being alone as if trying to escape from this cruel world. I pity him and at the same time I admire him for being a great leader. I hope they would also look out for their health.
ReplyDeleteI hope he doesn't commit suicide...his tattoos really say something about himself though. Nihilism, that he rejects all religious and moral principles. He doesn't believe in the existence of life. Then what are his fans? If he doesn't appreciate life nor his works who will? Also l, he has a new one- some fans think its Feat and loathing in Las Vegas which was creepy. It's all about drugs! Soemtimes, I think maybe hes on it. He looks sedated sometimes!
ReplyDeletedude, knowing you reply this on 2018 is creeping me out
DeleteWow you really said that in 2018..
DeleteKIM HANBIN FOR ME IS A PERSON FULL OF LOVE, I SEARCHED BEFORE WHAT HIS TATTOOS MEANS AND I FOUND THAT IT ALSO HAS A POSITIVE SIDE, JUST LOOK ON HOW HE LOVES HIS SISTER AND FAMILY, hIS BROTHERS iKON AND IKONICS. IF YOU'RE AN IKONIC YOU MUST BELIEVE ON HIM, HE LOVES US, PLEASE DONT JUDGE HIM, WE DON'T KNOW HIM PERSONALLLY BUT HE'S KIND, WARM AND SOFT HEARTED, HE MAY LOOK SCARY AT FIRST BUT IF YOU ONLY KNEW HIM MORE YOU'LL SEE WHO REALLY IS, JUST BELIEVE ON HIM, ARRASEO? HE'S SICK BUT IT'S NOT ABOUT DRUGS ALSO YOU'LL NOTICE HIS SONGS IS ABOUT LOVE WHY YOU'LL JUDGE HIM? HE BELIEVES IN IT. HE LOVES US
ReplyDeleteThis is not good..i love hanbin the way he is..i dont want him to end up being like a looser (no no big no i love him) he needs help please 😭😭😭😭 dont think too much hanbin-ah you are already good in every aspect..we know your passion clearly but please take a good care of your emotions 😭❤
ReplyDeleteAnd now, another news that pierced my heart... :'(
ReplyDeleteWhatever it is, if you're a real ikonic, you should love the man who put them where they are right now. Hanbin is one of the best leader i know in the whole kpop industry. Without hanbin, there's no ikon after all💖 it's normal to be cold because he is the most stress among them all. Don't judge him, if you still didn't see his inner side
ReplyDelete
