Pentagon Maker (Mnet)
Every Pentagon fan will know what Pentagon Maker is, the survival show Cube and Mnet put 10 boys through to eliminate a couple of them only to bring them back because of a petition started by fans. Now, every K-pop fan knows Mnet is infamous for evil editing and playing dirty. So how dirty did Mnet actually play this time?
Now in this battle, Pentagon member Jinho, an 8 year vocalist trainee that once performed with seniors in SM Ballad, and Pentagon member E'Dawn, the first member of Pentagon and an amazing dancer, were chosen to be leaders of two separate teams. They were to lead their teams to practice for a performance of their CUBE Seniors songs. They were fully unaware of the fact that BEAST Members , renowned musical vocalist, Yang Yoseob and genius dragon producer/rapper Yong Jun Hyung would be coming to judge their performance. Along with these BEAST members (now known as HIGHLIGHT), were the vice president and director of CUBE.
Members were asked to choose their teams by themselves, neither the leaders nor the producers were to decide the teams. ( I think. Who the hell knows what other dirty things Mnet may have done?)
Chinese member Yanan, Japanese member Yuto and Korean Member Yeo One chose Jinho as their team leader, clearly knowing that he is a vocal performance focused member. This combination created a 3 vocals and 1 rapper (Yuto) team with both foreign members inside.
The rest of the members; Kino, Wooseok, Shinwon, Hui and Hongseok chose E'Dawn, eager to get more point on performance by joining the dance performance focused leader, E'Dawn. This created a 4 Vocals and 2 Rappers team with the main dancer, Kino and both lead dancers, E'Dawn and Hui inside. This team is noticeably weaker in vocals but strong in performance and dance.
A challenge that Jinho's team faced during practice was that the foreign members were having problems with pronunciation. Jinho chose BEAST's On Rainy Days which is a slow song that focuses a lot on clear pronunciation and proper emotion control. [Side Note: I do not believe it was a coincidence both teams chose BEAST when they were not aware that their seniors were coming to judge them. The producers and trainers must have done some pushing] He solved this issue by teaching them to sing with a pen in their mouth, a popular technique JR from Nu'est taught Chinese CUBE trainee, Lai Guan Lin in Produce 101. This guarantees clear pronunciation when the pen is taken out.
E'Dawn's team, strong in performance, chose BEAST's famous strong yet emotional dance song, Good Luck. They rearranged it themselves, a commendable feat to note. They faced many challenges with injuries due to the extremely hard dance. Hongseok noticeably sustaining some of the worse injuries. In the end after some rearrangements, they manage to finish practicing the dance and working with the trainer to solve issues on mic placement during the energy consuming dance. [You will understand if you watch their practice clip here :E'Dawn Team Dance Practice]
Pentagon members were greeted with the sight of their Vice President and Director that day when they stepped into the performance hall giving them the first shock of the day, definitely not helping with their nerves. As if things could not get worse, a second shock was served to them in the form of Yang Yoseob and Yong Junhyung walking into the hall. When all greetings were completed, Yang Yoseob asked for an introduction of their songs.
Jinho went first, introducing their choice to sing On Rainy Days and with a push from the Director, admitted to Yoseob that he was doing high notes, which basically meant Yoseob's original parts in the song. Yoseob was very reactive to their introduction, giving them a big "wow" as soon as he was told they chose On Rainy Days, a daring choice as it was not one of BEAST's title song. Upon hearing Jinho was doing his high notes,Yoseob expressed that he would look forward to it. This obviously showed his favor over a vocal focused team due to him being one of the best Idol Vocalists.
Next, leader E'Dawn introduced that they will perform a rearranged version of BEAST's famous title track Good Luck. Yong Junhyung steps in here, expressing full interest as the producer of the song.
He mentions that the rearrangement is daring and something he could not do even after debut. I am not sure if this is of any relation but Yong Junhyung has mentioned on Weekly Idol that Good Luck is a song he thinks he did very well on and is a song he favors a lot. Yoseob now reacts less enthusiastically, only agreeing fairly quietly with Junhyung. Any Yoseob stan would know he is very expressive when it comes to what he has interest in.
During E'Dawns Team Performance, Yong Junhyung was noticeably talking a lot to Yoseob while the latter just nodded his head. At the end, he had a stone face on which was understandable as he probably did not want to give this team false hope before seeing Jinho's team. He criticized a bit and praised a bit while Yoseob, compared to what he said to Jinho's team after the performance, remained fairly quiet but he did state he that he enjoyed the rearrangement and would like to try it.
During Jinho's team performance, both had unreadable expressions and were very quiet. Once it ended, Yoseob did not hesitate to shower them with praises over their vocals and Mnet producers do not fail to remind audience that Junhyung clapped for this team. Yoseob did comment that the adlibs were not necessary and were a bit too much. But it did seem he favored this team better based on reaction.
Now, the judges were left to discuss the performances. The director and vice president chose Jinho's team, obviously preferring the solemn vocal performance while Yong Junhyung chose E'Dawn's team. This left Yoseob to choose between Jinho and E'Dawn who were now at 2:1 votes. He then clearly expressed his stress over the burdensome decision. The scene was cut but we learn later both teams were tied at 2:2 meaning Yoseob had chosen E'Dawn. Now this was weird, he obviously showed support for Jinho and I don't believe the adlibs had been that fatal of a mistake for the team. This is what leads me to believe something is suspicious here. Objectively, if you ask me, I too as a vocal focused person, think that Jinho did better in leading his team and creating the performance.
Now it's time to choose a MVP. Yoseob does not hesitate to show support for Jinho once more and chooses him as a good leader. At this point he puts his hand on his neck, a common movement for people under stress or feeling awkward. I would too, choosing E'Dawns team to win but then voting for the opponent's leader to be the MVP. As someone who has probably been in much more stressful situations, I do not believe that he could have felt that stressed under this situation that he would not be able to control biological actions, something many idols are taught to do so that they can lie better on broadcast. So I associate it with awkwardness. Now Junhyung, as expected supports E'Dawns team member Hui, saying he obviously has done a lot of research and worked hard.
This obviously shows Yoseob had preferred Jinho's team but chose E'Dawn because he was forced to or felt bad.
Now if all this I have said does not lead you to find anything fishy with this round of competition, I don't know what will. But what has happened has happened and now all 10 members are together. To be clear, I'm fighting against Mnet here for their evil editing and maybe even CUBE for playing dirty, not Pentagon, not Beast/Highlight.
Now that is all I have to say for my first post. You decide what you want to believe.
